Hurricane Preparedness For pets
Living in paradise means living with hurricane season. And now is the perfect time to make sure we are prepared - for us and for our furry family members.
The first part of hurricane preparedness is deciding on if you are going to evacuate, or if you are going to join the hurricane party.
Your list will be a little different with each one, so we've put together 2 lists to help you with your pet prep.
The "I'M OUTTA HERE" list...
Evacuation Zone & Route.
You can find your Evacuation Zone and Route for Charlotte County here -

HOTELS
Once you know your evacuation route and you have picked a final destination, you will need to find accommodations that allow pets.
Make a list of as many as possible that are along your route. Hotels book up quickly when people are evacuating, so you want a quick list of your options.
CAR TRAVEL
Dog
- Crate
or
- Harness (with seatbelt buckle adapter)
Cat
- Crate (with enough room for a small litter box).
COLLARS, HARNESSES, LEASHES.
-Martingale Collar (Dogs)
-Break Away Collar (Cats)
-Harness (Dog or Cat)
-Leash, 4' or 6' (Dog & Cat)
Both dogs and cats can become stressed due to a change in routine, and when traveling. This can cause them to behave in ways they normally wouldn't...Such as bolting when a car door opens, or when they are in an unfamiliar place.
A Martingale Collar is designed to slightly tighten up, just enough so that a dog cannot slip out of it, when a dog tries to pull away.
A harness, when used for travel, should fit snugly. If they can poke their elbows back through it then it is not the proper fit as they will be able to escape.
Cats should have a break away collar. And a harness should be used if you plan on walking them out doors.
ID.
Permanent ID
- Microchip (Dogs & Cats)
All dogs and cats should be Microchipped as collars can become lost. If your pet is already Microchipped then now is a good time to make sure that the information through the company they are Microchipped with is up to date.
Secondary ID
- Collar Tags
Tags should have 2 phone numbers. If your evaluation plans include leaving the state then it is ideal to include your address on the tag, or your area code.
FOOD
- Pack 7 days of meals
-Dry Food
-Canned Food
-Freeze Dried Food
You should also consider packing a couple packages of Pumpkin with Probiotics. The Pumpkin Patch Up puree is great for helping to settle upset tummies for both dogs and cats.
WATER
- Enough for 7 days
- 1 gallon of water per pet per day (general rule)
- 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day (minimum rule).
Some dogs and cats tend to get diarrhea when given water from a new source, so it is always ideal if you can provide them water they are used to drinking.
TRAVEL BOWLS FOR FOOD & WATER
- To save space consider getting collapsible bowls for your pet's prep bag.
MEDICATIONS
-7 days worth of prescription medication.
- 3 days of anxiety medication (if needed).
- If your dog or cat suffers from anxiety (especially when traveling) you do NOT want to wait until you are evacuating to experiment with calming aids.
 - There are many safe, over the counter calming aids available at CND Pet Boutique that you can try now.  If these are not sufficient to help with your pet's anxiety then it's worth a trip to the vet to see if a prescription anxiety medication is needed.
